US PET scrap exports down 2.5% in 1H, higher to Nigeria

HOUSTON, August 8, 2017 (PCW) -- US exports of PET scrap totaled 56,386 metric tons in 1H valued at $35.4 million, down 1,478 mt or 2.5% from 1H 2016, the latest US Commerce Dept data show.

Exports to Mexico, the top destination, totaled 14,013 mt in 1H, down 5% from 1H 2016. Exports to Canada, at number two, totaled 12,288 mt, down fractionally. The number three destination was Honduras at 6,590 mt, followed by Ecuador at 5,041 mt and Peru at 4,117 mt. PET scrap exports to Nigeria in 1H 2017 totaled 2,282 mt, up 965 mt or 73% from 1H 2016.

PET scrap is one of five plastic scrap categories tracked by the US gov for exports and imports. PET scrap exports in full year 2016 totaled 117,208 mt valued at $63.5 million. -- Xavier A. Cronin
