Sharp drop in US PET scrap exports in 2018

HOUSTON, March 14, 2019 (PCW)--US exports of PET scrap totaled 117,846 metric tons in 2018, down by 105,499 mt or 47.2% from 2017, the latest USA Trade Online data show. The main reason for the sharp drop was reductions to China and Hong Kong, the top two destinations of this scrap in 2017.

The US government tracks plastic scrap exports in five categories: PET, PE, PS, PVC and unsorted “other” plastic scrap. Even with a sharp drop, Hong Kong was the top destination of these exports in 2018, followed by Malaysia, Turkey and Taiwan. Exports to Vietnam were lower, at 20,454 mt and 7,095 mt in 2018 and 2017, respectively. -- Xavier A Cronin
