PVC Pipe Converters Close Plants as Hurricane Florence Advances
HOUSTON, September 14, 2018 (PCW) -- PVC pipe converters were watching Hurricane Florence make landfall in the Carolinas and worrying about whether and when to shut down their plants.
Most converters were shutting their plants down Friday afternoon and planning to restart on Monday if they have power. Those in this category include Charlotte Pipe & Foundry, Southern Pipe, Queen City Plastics, and IPEX. A couple, National Pipe and Silver Line, were rolling the dice and continuing to run.
Power outages were expected over much of North Carolina, and were predicted to last anywhere from one week to several weeks.
PVC producers were advising customers that rail and truck shipments in the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic regions would be delayed. After the storm, FEMA is expected to be using a large number of flatbed trucks to bring in emergency supplies, which could make it difficult to obtain trucks to ship pipe for some time. -- Donna Todd
